Our dedicated guide, who is based in the area, is eagerly waiting to accompany you on your chosen adventures in Amber Mountain National Park. The possibilities are endless, and we are committed to providing you with a tailored experience that aligns with your desires and energy levels for the day.
Among the circuits available, the easiest and most popular one takes you to the enchanting Sacred Waterfall (Cascade Sacree). This short yet immensely rewarding walk leads to a captivating waterfall cascading into a tranquil pool. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled, as you have excellent chances of spotting lemurs and a variety of bird species.
If you’re up for more waterfall explorations, there are two additional walks that culminate in cascading marvels. The Cascade Antankarana circuit offers an easy and relatively short trek, while the Cascade Antomboka trail presents a slightly more challenging terrain. For those seeking the allure of crater lakes, various treks lead to these captivating natural wonders. The shortest walk takes you to the picturesque Lac de la Coupe Verte, offering delightful views of the surrounding forest. To fully immerse yourself in the experience, a full-day excursion to Lac Grand and Lac Maudit is recommended. For those seeking a more exhilarating adventure, a climb to the summit of Amber Mountain itself promises a breathtaking panorama of the sprawling forest below.
Amber Mountain National Park is a sanctuary teeming with an abundance of wildlife. Prepare to encounter a diverse array of fascinating creatures, including 25 mammal species. Among them are six carnivores, such as the ring-tailed mongoose and the elusive fossa. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to observe eight lemur species, including Sanford’s brown lemur, crowned lemur, and lesser bamboo lemur. The park is also home to five species of nocturnal lemurs, adding an air of mystery to your explorations. With over 75 bird species, including the endemic and locally endemic Amber Mountain rock-thrush, birdwatching enthusiasts will be enthralled. The rich biodiversity extends to the reptile realm, where you’ll encounter tiny stump-tailed chameleons, leaf-tailed geckos, and an assortment of snakes. As you venture through the park, keep an eye out for the vibrant hues of 35 frog species and the graceful dance of over 40 butterfly species.
In the evening, we offer two alternatives for guided night walks in the Montagne d’Ambre area: the first is to the 300ha private park of Domain de Fontenay Lodge. After dark, your guide and driver will transfer you to the property, where your permits will be arranged and where your guide will take you along the easy trails, to look for nocturnal wildlife. The other option is a walk just outside the national park entrance, so as to explore the same kind of habitat which is in the park. Both sites are exceptionally rich in herpetofauna, so expect to see a variety of chameleons, geckoes (including at least 3 species of Uroplatus geckos) and frogs. You should also see Northern rufous mouse lemur and in summer, Greater dwarf lemur. After the walk, you will be transferred back to your accommodation for dinner

Day 4: Joffreville - Ankarana via Red Tsingy
Drive four hours to Ankarana special reserve, located about 100 kilometres from Diego Suarez.
On your way, you will visit the famous Red Tsingy (“Tsingy” means sharp, the word remains singular in Malagasy). This sight worth seeing is a sandstone formation made of small sandstone needles, which are located inside a small canyon and very photogenic. In contrast to all other Tsingys of Madagascar, the red ones are not of limestone and much smaller, restricted to only this single canyon. The beautiful red colour origins from laterite and gleams most brightly if the sun is shining on the needles. It was not before the middle of the 20th century when these sandstone needles were discovered: Due to area-covering slash and burn agriculture, landslides and erosions changed the face of the earth and brought the red Tsingys to the surface. Since the Tsingys are made of sandstone, they have been and will be eroded by weather and time – but at the same time, “new” Tsingys appear through new erosions along the canyon all the time. They have just been waiting for their discovery beneath the soil like their relatives did. We will provide a picnic lunch at the Red Tsingy.
After your visit you’ll drive on towards Ankarana. The Ankarana National park is the home of the Grey Tsingy. While smaller than in Western Madagascar, they’re similarly impressive.
Whilst in Ankarana, we’ll stay at Ankarana Lodge, an ideal gateway to the captivating national nature reserve that envelops its surroundings. Nestled in a stunning natural setting, the lodge offers an exceptional atmosphere, immersing you in the beauty of the limestone formations and the enchanting dry savanna.
Nature enthusiasts and animal lovers will be delighted by the diverse array of wildlife that graces the lodge. Prepare to be mesmerized as various species of lemurs and birds visit the lodge, adding a touch of magic to your experience. Additionally, the lodge provides a unique opportunity to encounter fascinating creatures such as chameleons, frogs, lizards, and snakes, which inhabit the vicinity of our accommodations.

The park also harbours a diverse mix of lemur species, including the captivating nocturnal lepilemurs that inhabit tree cavities.
Throughout our exploration, our dedicated guide, who is intimately familiar with the area, will be at your disposal, ensuring a personalised and enriching experience tailored to your preferences.
Ankarana National Park presents eight captivating circuits that traverse its eastern region. All circuits commence at the main office located in Mahamasina. The classic 6-hour circuit from Mahamasina encompasses the exploration of notable sites such as Lost Rivers, Bat Caves, Petit Tsingy, Ambahibe Cave, and the panoramic point of Ambohimalaza.

Next, venture to the enchanting Baobabs near the French Mountain. Embark on a short hike that leads you through remarkable terrain, ultimately unveiling the ancient and majestic baobab trees. Take a moment to marvel at these incredible giants, appreciating their grandeur and the history they hold within their sturdy trunks.
Please note that today we provide just a car for transfers, boat fees, guide and picnic. Kiteboarding, snorkelling etc are on your own arrangements.

Day 9: Wildlife in Andasibe
Guided visit to Analamazaotra Special reserve.
Be captivated by the wonders of Analamazaotra, home to the most popular park within the reserve. This enchanting destination holds a special allure, primarily due to the presence of the rare indri, Madagascar’s largest lemur. Throughout the misty forest, the indri’s haunting and unforgettable wail resonates, creating an otherworldly ambiance that can be experienced throughout the day, but most prominently in the early morning. With approximately 60 resident family groups, each consisting of two to five indris, you’ll have ample opportunities to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
While the indris steal the spotlight, the park is teeming with an array of other remarkable lemur species. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of woolly lemurs, grey bamboo lemurs, red-fronted lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, and diademed sifakas, which are among the largest lemur species. In 2005, the Goodman’s mouse lemur, identified as a distinct species, was discovered here, further adding to the park’s biodiversity. As you explore, you’ll also encounter eleven species of tenrec, the vibrant and immense Parson’s chameleon, and an impressive array of seven other chameleon species. Day 11: Palmarium Reserve & Aye-Aye Island
Guided visit to Palmarium Reserve. Ankanin’ny nofy is known as nest of dreams, offers a perfect place for relaxation with its beautiful beaches and interesting tours with its private natural reserve. The isolation of the reserve means it is one of the few places in Madagascar where it is possible to come close to some of the least timid, free-ranging and tame lemur species on the island, including the largest lemurs, the Indri. The area is also home to the emblem of Madagasacar, the Ravinala, as well as frogs, reptiles, orchids, palm trees and the carnivorous pitcher plant.
In the afternoon, you are free to make your own arrangements with the Palmarium, such as a half-day trip to Andranokoditra to discover the fishing village located on the east coast. You can also embark on a canoe ride through the picturesque Pangalanes Channel, or board a boat to explore the Vohibola forest, one of the few remaining primary forests in eastern Madagascar.
Night: nocturnal Aye-Aye visit. We board on a speed boat and ride to a small island to spot the Aye Aye owned by the Palmarium Hotel. The Aye Aye is a rare and endangered lemur species that is often considered a bad omen by local people due to its nocturnal nature. In the past, the species was hunted for meat and as a result, it became endangered and close to extinction. However, thanks to the Palmarium reserve, some Aye Aye species were relocated to a small island where they are now protected. A guided tour of the reserve offers a unique opportunity to see these fascinating creatures up close and in their natural habitat.
