In late September 2025, Dadamanga’s team set out for Morondava, originally to accompany Madagascar’s Minister of Tourism for the World Tourism Day celebrations. When the event was unexpectedly canceled, we decided to stay in Morondava and continue the journey — transforming it into a hands-on field study, or Éductour.
This trip allowed us to deepen and refresh our understanding of Morondava’s tourism reality, assess its potential for our clients, and strengthen relationships with local partners.
From Fort-Dauphin to Antananarivo – A Lesson in Logistics
The adventure began in Fort-Dauphin, with a smooth connection through Antananarivo. Our airport transfer, arranged by San Cristobal Hotel, went efficiently despite a short delay while another guest was collected.
San Cristobal Hotel proved to be a comfortable stopover, offering clean, quiet rooms and an excellent breakfast buffet. Lunch at Nosy Manga was a highlight — great food, attentive service, and a warm atmosphere that left a positive impression.
Arrival in Morondava – Warmth and Discovery
The next morning, we flew to Morondava and were warmly greeted at André Resampa Airport by our local driver. His deep knowledge of the area and passion for his hometown immediately stood out. With thoughtful guidance, his explanations can easily be adapted to suit the pace and interests of international travelers — a great asset for future visitors.
Kimony Resort – Natural Setting, Room for Improvement
Our first accommodation, Kimony Resort, is known for its lush surroundings and peaceful location outside the city. While the property has clear potential and an appealing natural setting, we decided that we would prefer to be in the thick of things in the centre of town.
Even so, Kimony’s tranquil environment and rural charm make it a suitable choice for travelers seeking quiet and simplicity, away from the bustle of town.
Chez Maggie – Rediscovering Authenticity
That change of scene brought us to Chez Maggie, located right in the heart of Morondava. Here, we immediately felt a family-style sense of warmth and authenticity.
The staff were attentive, the rooms comfortable, and the overall atmosphere genuinely welcoming. Meals were freshly prepared and full of local flavor — a reminder that simplicity, when done with care, can be deeply satisfying. Chez Maggie stands out as a dependable choice for travelers looking for genuine Malagasy hospitality in a relaxed setting, at a reasonable price.

Morondava’s Icons – Nature, Emotion, and Wonder
Baobab Avenue – Madagascar’s Most Photogenic Landmark
No introduction is needed for Baobab Avenue. Standing among these ancient giants at sunset is a breathtaking moment — the golden light, the towering silhouettes, and the serenity of the scene are unforgettable. The nearby stalls selling ice cream and snacks add a delightful local touch to this world-famous landscape.

Kirindy Forest – Wildlife and Raw Beauty
Just north of Morondava lies Kirindy Forest, a dry deciduous forest rich in biodiversity. During our visit, we were fortunate to observe several lemur species, chameleons, and even Madagascar’s iconic predator, the fosa.
While the reserve’s infrastructure could benefit from some modernization, the site remains a valuable conservation area offering visitors a glimpse into Madagascar’s unique wildlife.
Ankiba Lodge – A Model for Sustainable Ecotourism
Our stay at Ankiba Lodge was one of the trip’s most rewarding experiences. The lodge is impeccably maintained and guided by a genuine environmental ethos.
Led by an exceptional naturalist guide, we spotted sifakas, owls, chameleons, and Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur, the smallest primate in the world. The professionalism and passion of the team made this visit both educational and inspiring — an excellent example of sustainable tourism done right.
Culinary and Hotel Highlights – The Good, the Great, and the Promising
Morondava offers a growing variety of accommodation and dining options, reflecting the destination’s emerging tourism potential.
Le Palissandre Cote Ouest provided a warm welcome in an elegant setting, stunning rooms and a really beautiful central building. Although the cuisine was straightforward, the comfort and hospitality made it a reliable choice.

At Baobab Café, guests can enjoy pleasant views and a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a casual lunch in town.
Laguna Beach stands out for its inviting pool and beautifully prepared dinners — a great place for those who wish to unwind by the sea.
For travelers on a budget, Kily House offers clean, quiet rooms at excellent value, while Trecicogne provides a practical alternative for short stays.
Among higher-end options, Vezo Beach impressed us most — refined cuisine, attentive service, and an idyllic beachfront setting that meets international expectations.
For an enjoyable evening out, Le Corail Restaurant is lively and full of character, with hearty portions of local seafood and discreet local live music. Meanwhile, Blue Soleil quickly became one of our favorite seaside stops — relaxed, scenic, and complemented by excellent food and homemade ice cream nearby. The Baobab-flavoured ice cream was a stand out.
Kivalo and the Menabe Ecotourism Center – Heartfelt Encounters
Our speedboat excursion to Kivalo was a true adventure — a bit bumpy, certainly memorable, and absolutely authentic. Upon arrival, we were welcomed warmly by the local community and treated to freshly caught crab, prepared with simplicity and pride. You do not need to take a speedboat, it is most usually visited by car and then pirogue.
The visit to the Menabe Ecotourism Center was deeply moving. This initiative employs people with disabilities in the production of local crafts, providing meaningful work and a sense of inclusion. It’s an inspiring model of community-based tourism that reflects the very best of what Madagascar can offer: resilience, creativity, and heart.
Back to Antananarivo – A Graceful Farewell
Our final night was spent at Relais des Plateaux, conveniently located near Ivato Airport in Antananarivo. Its spacious rooms, professional staff, charming garden and public spaces, and excellent dining service made it a perfect conclusion to our journey — a reminder that Madagascar’s hospitality continues to rise in quality and professionalism.
Our Take on Morondava
Morondava is really one of Madagascar’s most captivating destinations. Its combination of natural beauty, rich wildlife, and cultural authenticity makes it ideal for travelers seeking both adventure and connection.
While certain areas still require improvement — particularly in infrastructure and logistics — the region’s progress and commitment to sustainable tourism are evident. With the right planning and guidance, Morondava offers an experience that is as rewarding as it is unforgettable.

Top Tips for Visiting Morondava
1. Time your visit for the dry season (April–November).
Roads are more reliable, and sunsets at Baobab Avenue are particularly spectacular in the clear, dry air.
2. Don’t rush your itinerary.
Distances can be deceptive in western Madagascar. Build in flexibility — this region rewards slow, mindful travel.
3. Stay near the city center for convenience.
Accommodations like Chez Maggie or Vezo Beach offer easy access to restaurants, shops, and the beach, minimizing transfers.
4. Book experienced local guides.
Whether spotting wildlife in Kirindy or visiting Kivalo, knowledgeable guides enrich the experience with insight and connection.
5. Support sustainable initiatives.
Projects like the Menabe Ecotourism Center and eco-conscious lodges such as Ankiba demonstrate that responsible tourism truly makes a difference.
