If you’re planning a Madagascar travel experience to the legendary Tsingy de Bemaraha, one of the first questions you’ll ask (and many people ask us) is: How do I actually get there?
Located in western Madagascar, the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is remote, wild, and absolutely worth the effort. But reaching this UNESCO World Heritage Site requires careful itinerary planning — whether you travel by road, river, air, or charter.
Below you’ll find a detailed breakdown of every realistic route to the Tsingy, so you can choose the option that best fits your Madagascar vacation style, timeframe, and comfort level.
Where Exactly Is the Tsingy de Bemaraha?
The Tsingy is located near the small village of Bekopaka in western Madagascar. The key towns for your travel to the Tsingy are:
- Antananarivo (commonly called “Tana”) – most trips start here
- Morondava – this is the nearest regional city
- Miandrivazo – this is a stopping off point either for a road trip, or, to meet your river boat for an amazing three day adventure down the Tsiribihina River ending at Belo sur Tsiribihina, a few hours drive from the Tsingy
- Bekopaka – this is the nearest vilage to the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park
Because of seasonal road conditions and river crossings, reaching the Tsingy requires planning. Please note that the park closes annually around mid-December, typically reopening starting sometime in April (dates depend on weather and hotels). To be sure that we can provide the service that we sell, we do not like to sell visits to the Tsingy after the end of November, or before the first week of May each year.
Let’s explore your options.
1. By Road from Antananarivo (Tana)
Best for: Adventurous travelers with time
Minimum duration: 8 days round trip from Tana
4 days minimum if starting/ending in Morondava for two days in the park, or three days for one day in the park.
Important note: The drive from Antananarivo to Morondava takes 18 hours, and Dadamanga does not make that trip in one day for safety reasons. So, if you want to go by road, you need adequate time available.
A classic overland tour to Madagascar’s Tsingy is a true expedition — and for many seasoned travelers, it becomes the highlight of their entire tour.
Typical Duration Breakdown from Tana:
- 2 full days driving to reach Morondava
- 1 day of driving to reach Bekopaka
- 1 day for the Petit Tsingy
- 1 day for the Grand Tsingy
- 1 day to return to Morondava usually with a stop at the Avenue of Baobabs for sunset
- 2 days to drive back to Antananarivo, or, one day to drive to Antsirabe, to join the RN7 highway and a trip onwards to the many parks along that route.
If you start and finish in Morondava, the journey shortens significantly:
- 1 day to Bekopaka
- 1 or 2 days in the park
- 1 day return to Morondava usually with a stop at the Avenue of Baobabs for sunset
What Makes the Road Journey Special?
The road itself is part of the experience. You’ll:
- Cross rivers by local ferry
- Pass baobab landscapes near Morondava
- Travel through remote villages
- Witness authentic Madagascar country life far from the airport hubs
Important Practical Notes
- Roads are rough — 4×4 vehicles are essential.
- Travel times are long and weather-dependent.
- A professional driver who knows the terrain is critical.
- Expect basic but comfortable lodges in Bekopaka, powered by solar.
This option suits travelers who value slow exploration and want to experience western Madagascar beyond the parks.
2. Fly from Antananarivo to Morondava + Road Transfer
Best for: Travelers short on time
Minimum duration: 4–5 days total
This is the most balanced and popular option for many Madagascar tours.
Step-by-Step:
- Commercial flight from Antananarivo to Morondava
- 1 full day driving to Bekopaka
- 1–2 days exploring the Tsingy
- 1 day return to Morondava usually with a stop at the Avenue of Baobabs for sunset
- Fly or drive onward
Flights reduce road fatigue dramatically and allow you to focus your energy on the Grand and Petit Tsingy visits.
Why Two Days in the Tsingy Is Ideal
The park is divided into:
- Petit Tsingy – Smaller formations, easier walking trails, combined on the same day with a pirogue journey on the Manambolo River to the Gorges of the Manambolo
- Grand Tsingy – Dramatic limestone pinnacles, via ferrata sections, suspension bridges
Each requires a dedicated day. Rushing both into one day is not possible.
This route is perfect for travelers who want a meaningful Madagascar vacation without committing to a long overland expedition.
3. Road + Tsiribihina River Boat Expedition
Best for: Nature lovers and photographers
Minimum duration: 6–7 days
This is arguably one of the most beautiful approaches to the Tsingy.
The Journey
- Day 1: Drive from Tana to Miandrivazo
- Days 2–4: 3-day river descent on the Tsiribihina River
- Nights spent camping on sandbanks, showering under waterfalls
- Late afternoon arrival near Bekopaka on Day 4
- 1–2 days in the Tsingy
- 1 day drive to Morondava usually with a stop at the Avenue of Baobabs for sunset
- Fly or drive onward
Sleeping in tents on the riverbank under vast Malagasy skies is unforgettable. The natural beauty is astonishing — sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, birds, occasional crocodiles, and sometimes lemurs in the trees along the river. Many people have given us feedback that this was the most memorable part of their time in Madagascar.
Practical Considerations
- Camps are simple but very well organized and the food, while simple, is universally praised
- Advance reservations are essential
This option is slower travel, and blends adventure with comfort — especially when managed by an experienced tour agency that coordinates river logistics seamlessly.
4. By Private Charter Aircraft
Best for: High-end travelers, limited time itineraries
Most time-efficient option
Charter flights dramatically reduce travel time and are often integrated into luxury Madagascar tours.
Typical Charter Scenarios
Option A:
- Fly directly to Bekopaka
- 1 full day in the Tsingy
- Continue to Morondava same afternoon, visit the Avenue of Baobabs for sunset, and move on either back to Antananarivo or to your next destination, the next morning
Option B:
- Fly to Bekopaka
- Aircraft repositions to Morondava overnight
- 2 days in the Tsingy
- Return flight next afternoon either back to Antananarivo or to your next destination
Important note:
There is no security for aircraft at Bekopaka’s small airstrip. The aircraft must overnight in Morondava. This adds cost due to:
- Extra fuel legs (Bekopaka–Morondava–Bekopaka)
- Aircraft retention overnight
However, for travelers combining multiple remote parks in a short timeframe, charter travel can transform a long overland route into a seamless journey.

How Many Days Do You Really Need?
For most Madagascar travel itineraries, we recommend:
- 4 days minimum if flying into Morondava
- 8+ days if traveling entirely by road from Tana
- 6–7 days for the river expedition option
Two days inside the park are ideal to properly experience both sections without rushing.
Practical Travel Tips for Visiting the Tsingy
- Travel in the dry season (May–November) for best road conditions.
- Book early — accommodation in Bekopaka is limited.
- Wear proper footwear for sharp limestone terrain.
- Be reasonably fit — Grand Tsingy involves climbing and suspension bridges.
- Use experienced guides — park visits require certified local guides.
Good itinerary planning makes the difference between a stressful trip and a seamless Madagascar vacation.
Why Expert Coordination Matters
The Tsingy is not a destination you simply “add on.” Logistics involve multiple moving parts — flights, 4×4 transfers, park permits, river levels, seasonal road conditions, and reliable drivers.
A well-coordinated team ensures:
- Safe transfers
- Realistic daily timing
- Smooth airport connections
- Efficient communication for enquiries
- Proper pacing for comfort
For many of our travelers, the journey to the Tsingy becomes just as memorable as the limestone forest itself.
Final Thoughts: Is the Tsingy Worth the Effort?
Absolutely.
The Tsingy de Bemaraha is one of Africa’s most extraordinary landscapes — a cathedral of stone rising from dry forest and river plains. Yes, it requires planning. Yes, it takes time. But that remoteness is exactly what preserves its magic.
For experienced travelers seeking true natural beauty, dramatic wildlife habitats, and a sense of expedition, this is Madagascar at its most unforgettable.
If you’re designing your own Madagascar tour and wondering how to incorporate the Tsingy into your itinerary, use this guide as your starting point — and allow enough time to truly experience it.

Adding Kirindy Reserve to Your Tsingy Itinerary
When planning Madagascar travel in the west, many visitors also want to include Kirindy Forest Reserve for one very special reason: the chance to see the elusive fosa.
Kirindy lies on the same road between Morondava and Bekopaka, making it geographically convenient to combine with the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. However, while it looks simple on a map, it does require additional time in your itinerary.

Why Visit Kirindy?
Kirindy is one of the best places in Madagascar to see:
- The fosa (Madagascar’s top predator)
- Nocturnal lemurs on guided night walks
- Unique dry deciduous forest wildlife
- Rare birds and reptiles
The fosa is notoriously difficult to see elsewhere. In Kirindy, sightings are almost guaranteed.
How Much Extra Time Do You Need?
In most cases, adding Kirindy requires one additional day in your program.
A typical Kirindy extension looks like this:
- Drive from Morondava to Kirindy (approximately 2 hours)
- Overnight at the simple forest lodge
- Night walk on the first evening
- Early morning forest walk
- Continue onward to Bekopaka after the morning visit
This schedule allows you to experience both the nocturnal and diurnal wildlife activity, which is essential for maximizing sightings.
Trying to “pass through” without staying overnight is rarely worthwhile.
If You Are Flying into Morondava
If you arrive by commercial flight into Morondava, it is often possible — depending on your flight arrival time — to:
- Drive directly from the airport to Kirindy
- Overnight in Kirindy and do a night walk
- Do an early morning forest walk
- Continue on to Bekopaka later that morning
This is usually the most efficient way to integrate Kirindy into a Madagascar tour that includes the Tsingy.
However, flight schedules matter. Because road travel in western Madagascar should not continue after dark, arrival times must allow for safe transfer.
Important Timing and Safety Notes
There are several critical logistical considerations in the west:
- Kirindy is approximately two hours from Morondava
- You must be off the roads before dark
- Road conditions can vary significantly
For this reason:
It is not possible to enjoy sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs and then continue on to Kirindy the same evening. Attempting both would require driving after dark, which is unsafe and strongly discouraged.
Follow your tour operator’s guidance closely. In the west of Madagascar, we often travel in convoy with other vehicles when possible. This adds an extra layer of safety and reliability in remote areas.
How Kirindy Fits into Different Travel Styles
Overland from Antananarivo
Kirindy is usually inserted between Morondava and Bekopaka, adding one night to your western itinerary.
Fly to Morondava + Road
This is often the cleanest integration:
- Flight to Morondava
- Drive to Kirindy
- Overnight and forest visits
- Continue to Bekopaka
Charter Travel
With charter aircraft, Kirindy can sometimes be added after returning from the Tsingy to Morondava, depending on timing, priorities, and whether you are prepared to pay to hold the aircraft while you overnight in Kirindy.
Is Kirindy Worth the Extra Day?
If wildlife is important to you — particularly seeing the fosa — then yes, absolutely.
Kirindy’s dry forest ecosystem is completely different from the limestone formations of the Tsingy. The contrast between sharp stone pinnacles and dense deciduous forest adds depth to your Madagascar travel experience.
However, the key is realistic pacing. Western Madagascar rewards travelers who allow enough time for distances, road conditions, and proper forest visits. Trying to compress too much into too few days often leads to fatigue.
Final Advice for Planning the West
When combining:
- Tsingy de Bemaraha
- Kirindy Forest Reserve
- Morondava
- The Avenue of the Baobabs
Careful itinerary planning is essential. Distances may look short, but driving times are long, and daylight hours matter.
In the west of Madagascar, experience and local coordination make all the difference. With the right pacing, adding Kirindy transforms your Tsingy journey from a dramatic landscape adventure into a complete western Madagascar wildlife experience.
